SOIL - The backbone of a vine
“Tell me where you are from and I`ll tell you who you are.”
This saying doesn`t just apply to people, it is particularly appropriate for wine too. The nature and composition of the soil, the smell and dampness reveal to the vintner which vine should be planted where.
It is literally a “deep” relationship which develops between the plant and its soil, enabling the vine to “take root”. Those roots need a strong backbone, a good water source together with life supporting nutrients.
And it is these components which we later taste in the finished product.
Knowledge of the vineyards soils in and around Maikammer has always been of upmost importance to the Ziegler winery`s tradition. Knowledge of the vines themselves, their history and their requirements are crucial, if rewards and pleasure are to be reaped.
